Problem Statement

How do I design the shell of a heat exchanger for vacuum pressure using the Aspen Icarus software? The program gives only the option of Shell design gauge pressure. I am not sure at all whether a negative pressure will be taken as external pressure in the Aspen Icarus software.

Solution

There is an implied vacuum design for all heat exchangers in the Aspen Icarus software. We always design for worst case, so the Icarus cost engine uses full vacuum.
