Problem Statement

This KB article provides guidance for installing the latest CP on a GDOT machine. It also explains on the SLM configuration before and after patch installation.

Solution
When upgrading a GDOT machine to the latest CP, use the following steps:
  1. Launch aspenONE SLM License Manager:

    • Click on “Configure” and “Yes” to the dialog asking if you want to allow this app to make changes. The “SLM Configuration Wizard” dialog should appear:

    • Click on “Show Buckets”. This launches a dialog that shows the list of available license buckets as well as which buckets are currently active (selected). GDOT will search for a suitable license in the selected buckets. Make sure that the correct buckets are selected. For GDOT this typically means that both the Default bucket is selected and that one of the higher-numbered buckets that contains the GDOT licenses is selected. For example:

    • Make notes of which license servers and, for each server, which buckets are selected. You will need to check this again after the installation.
    • Click “Done” on this dialog. If you made any changes then click “Apply Changes” on the “SLM Configuration Wizard” dialog.
    • Next, in the “SLM Configuration Wizard” dialog, expand the “Advanced Settings” list of options. The key step here is to make sure that “Enable Broadcasting” is unchecked (deactivated). If it is checked then uncheck it and again click “Apply Changes”:

    • Close the dialog.
    • If you made any changes to the license configuration then reboot your machine at this point.

  1. If there is a GDOT Emergency Patch (EP) or Field Test (FT) installed, you must first uninstall it. This rolls the installation back to the state of either the main release (e.g., V11) or the main release plus previous CP (e.g., V11 CP1). Next run the installer for the new CP. For example, starting with V11 CP1 EP6:
  1. Uninstall EP6 to roll back to V11 CP1
  2. Next run the installer for CP2 (without first uninstalling V11 CP1)
  3. The state of the GDOT install is now V11 CP2 (we successfully installed CP2 on top of V11 CP1)
  4. Make sure you reboot the machine each time you are prompted to do so. Do not wait to reboot later. In particular, do not apply additional patches without first rebooting.

  1. Use the AspenTechn SLM License Manager to check that:
  1. The servers configured before the install are still configured after the install.
  2. For each license server only the expected buckets are selected (i.e., match the configuration you noted before the install).
  3. The “Enable broadcast” setting is unchecked.
  4. If you need to make any changes then make sure you reboot the machine afterwards.
