Professor Spotlight
In this section, we highlight professor using AspenTech solutions to empower the next generation of engineers and their innovative approach to teaching process simulation using AspenTech software.
We met with Dr. Y. A. Liu, Alumni Distinguished Professor in Chemical Engineering at Virginia Tech. During our conversation, Professor Liu shared insights into his innovative approach, shedding light on how he equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to address real-world challenges in sustainable design.
Through his capstone design courses, Professor Liu’s students engage with AspenTech software through hands-on bootcamps and individual projects. At the beginning of the fall semester, they explore flowsheet synthesis, process simulation, and economic & safety analysis – all crucial for sustainable design.
"We guide students through a step-by-step process," explains Professor Liu. "They begin with a basic, safe flowsheet and gradually build towards a fully optimized design that integrates heat recovery and considers economic feasibility." This approach ensures students gain a deep understanding of the design process while honing their problem-solving skills.
In the spring semester, students take their learnings a step further by tackling real-world industrial projects or participating in design competitions. Depending on the project’s specific needs, Professor Liu provides hands-on tutorial materials for students to learn additional AspenTech software like Aspen Plus Dynamics, Aspen Polymers, Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Adsorption, and Aspen Chromatography.
Professor Liu's approach paves the way for a more sustainable future. By integrating cutting-edge software and fostering teamwork, he empowers graduates to become leaders in sustainable engineering.
