Crude Unit Optimization - Debottlenecking Options to Increase Throughput using Aspen HYSYS

In this hands-on simulation workshop, you will use Aspen HYSYS to compare several debottlenecking options for increasing crude unit throughput capacity. You will evaluate several scenarios to ensure that the high-capacity constraints are addressed, that the proposed options target a 10 percent increase in throughput, and that the cost of the proposed debottlenecking options can be studied in detail to further reduce cost or improve the likely outcome.

Audience:

  • Engineers interested in optimizing crude unit operations
  • Engineers interested in plant debottlenecking techniques and methods for evaluating plant improvement options
  • Engineers with experience in simulation who wish to use Aspen HYSYS

Training Details

  • Course Id:

    EHY902

  • Duration:

    0.5 day(s)

  • CEUs Awarded:

    0.4

  • Level:

    Workshop

Approach

  • Evaluate and modify a CDU / VDU model built by a simulation specialist to compare debottlenecking options based on given feasibility study data
  • Learn about CDU / VDU simulation and analysis, interaction and trade-offs between energy and yields
  • Learn how to analyse modifications to the unit design and operation
  • Learn to investigate alternative design scenarios
  • Learn how to conduct cost evaluations for proposed process improvements.

Tasks

  • Identify and understand the cause of typical bottlenecks that limit CDU throughput. Identify major equipment items that are currently limiting the throughput or have the potential to constrain the process as capacity is increased.
  • Investigate process design change options. Add a preflash drum and preflash tower to compare improvements and constraints.
  • Improve energy performance to address furnace limitations. Investigate simple preheat train modification, pumparound heat removal versus yields, Exchanger Design and Rating (EDR), column tray capacity and flooding limits.
  • Consider alternative ways around constraints. Run multiple case studies and create a "Case Study" spreadsheet to compare the pros and cons of each process modification made and determine the optimal direction to take for a more detailed study.

Pre-requisites

You should be familiar with Aspen HYSYS steady-state modeling concepts.
