Analyzing Safety Operation of Multi-stage Compressors using Aspen HYSYS

In this hands-on simulation workshop, you will use Aspen HYSYS Dynamics to perform dynamic analysis of a multi-stage compressor for operational and safety studies. You will evaluate several scenarios to ensure that the compressor is protected in an emergency shutdown, that the proposed anti-surge algorithms provide adequate compressor protection for the loss of suction flow, and that the standard start-up procedure developed by the manufacturer is adequate for the installation facility.

Audience:

  • Engineers interested in evaluating multi-stage compressor protection strategies and start-up procedures
  • Engineers interested in applying Aspen HYSYS Dynamics to analyze multi-stage compressors

Training Details

  • Course Id:

    EHY020

  • Duration:

    0.5 day(s)

  • CEUs Awarded:

    0.4

  • Level:

    Introductory

Approach

  • Evaluate and complete a model built by a simulation specialist to perform the necessary dynamic analysis
  • Learn how to use the available turbine information (power vs. speed) to create a simple driver model
  • Connect the two compression stages and the driver model
  • Configure the two anti-surge controllers (one per stage) and implement a suction pressure controller that will be cascaded with the turbine speed controller

Tasks

  • Inlet isolation valve blockage – the plant operator had a case in the past when a similar gas compressor suffered severe damage in one of the impellers as a consequence of a blockage in the suction piping. In this case, the operator wants to make sure the compressor control will respond fast enough to such event.
  • A standard emergency shutdown (ESD) scenario needs to be simulated to ensure that the compressor trip trajectories are within allowed operating limits, or if not, propose necessary corrective actions before the compressor is commissioned
  • The plant operator also needs a detailed start-up sequence and proof that this will lead to a smooth re-start after an ESD

Pre-requisites

You should be familiar with Aspen HYSYS steady-state and basic dynamic modeling concepts.
