Day 1 – Morning (0900H – 1300H): System Overview and User Interface
- Review the Orion System architecture and understand the interface and its features.
Scheduling Workflow
- Review the workflow for Refinery scheduling and the processes involved such as inventory loading and auditing data, baseline import, etc.
- Demo: Performing Inventory update using Aspen Excel Integration Utility
Event Application
- Introduce the APS/Orion scheduling application to schedule events, learn about navigation through event interface in order to perform refinery scheduling and also methods of trending data using APS.
- Review different types of events and their usage.
- Demo: Using APS ,create a crude schedule keeping into consideration the refinery crude operations and the constraints if any.
- Demo: Create a process schedule and making use of the Event Interface and Trend interface to trend tank and property information.
Blend Scheduling
- Understand the purpose of Optimization functionality of Single Blend Optimizer in APS and the events associated with the blending process.
- Demo: Create a blend event using Single Blend Optimizer tool for 2 days for a specific grade of Gasoline and obtain an optimized recipe.
Simulation and Publishing
- Review the different methods available for performing simulation of a schedule and also understand the different methods of publishing available.
Advanced Techniques
- Review the modelling techniques helpful for property tracking, inventory representation and control.
- Demo: Define a linearly calculated property and the method to track using APS Flowsheets.
Day 1 – Afternoon (1300H – 1800H):Self-practice with APS through cloud-based environmentPractice Workshops using Demo model:

- Learn about the Trend and Event interface to trend tank and property information and it’s other features.
- Using Blending Event screen, optimize a blend event using Single Blend Optimizer and learn about the objective function.
