Introductory class to Aspen Plus

This is an introductory class to the Aspen Plus fundamentals. This training has been designed for participants seeking an introductory overview of Aspen Plus in a hands-on modality. This version is delivered virtually through a 4-hrs online instructor-led session with access to a virtual training lab for practices.

This course is designed for participants who want to increase their knowledge and experience using Aspen Plus, not only from a theorical perspective but from a practical one that could enrich their skills using this tool.

Pre-requisites

  • A background in chemical/process engineering, oil/gas industry or in Specialty Chemical Industry. 
  • Attendees must have reasonable knowledge/practical usage experience with simulation softwares. 
  • Computer with Internet access.

  • Introduce general flowsheet simulation concepts and Aspen Plus features

Heat Exchanger Models

  • Develop a working knowledge of the Aspen Plus Simulation Environment
  • Build  a process flowsheet and enter stream and block information in an Aspen Plus simulation
  • Run the simulation
  • Workshop 2: Model a Heat Exchanger
  • Workshop 3: Model a Rigorous Heat Exchanger

Separators and Columns

  • Distinguish between Rating and Design of distillation columns
  • Use the RadFrac fractionation model to rate an existing distillation column performance
  • Use design specifications
  • Implement column efficiency and hydraulic calculations for distillation column models
  • Workshop 4: Rate a methanol tower performance using RadFrac
  • Workshop 5: Develop a methanol tower model that meets purity specifications

Reactor Models

  • List the classes of reactor models available
  • Review details of the equilibrium and kinetic based reactors
  • Apply acquired skills from the previous sections to build a cyclohexane production flowsheet
  • Workshop 6: Build a Cyclohexane Production Flowsheet

Sensitivity Analysis, Design Specification and Calculator Bloc

  • Illustrate relationships between process variables using sensitivity analysis
  • Demonstrate accessing flowsheet variables
  • Use design specifications to meet process design requirements
  • Implement Microsoft Excel and Fortran Calculator blocks
  • Workshop 7: Use a Calculator Block to Maintain a Flow Ratio in the Feed of a Reactor
