    Introductory

Benefits

Learn to embed and link an Aspen HYSYS Simulation case and variables within MS Excel® without using any programming languages

Approach

  • Course notes containing lecture materials, examples, and workshops are distributed
  • Lecture topics are reinforced with workshops throughout the day
  • Questions relating the course material to real life problems are encouraged

Pre-requisites

Attend training course EHY101 Aspen HYSYS: Process Modeling or extended experience in using Aspen HYSYS product for process modeling.

Subsequent Courses

  • EHY201 Aspen HYSYS: Process Modeling Additional Topics
  • EHY2102 Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining: Process Modeling and Optimization for Refinery Unit Operations
  • EHY221 Aspen HYSYS Dynamics: Dynamic Modeling

Agenda

Introduction – What is Aspen Simulation Workbook (ASW)
  • Brief introduction about Aspen Simulation workbook and the add in tool in MS Excel®

Basic Features of ASW
  • Manage the ASW Add-in inside Excel
  • Overview of the ASW Environment and working with Model Variables
  • Use the Table Wizard to build tables of simulation variables
  • Workshop: Create a process flow diagram using ASW process icon library
  • Workshop: Link an Aspen HYSYS simulation process, add key model variables to the Variable Organizer and create tables of the variables in ASW
  • Workshop: Create a table template for creating multiple tables using the same layout and format

Adding Automation to Your ASW Interface
  • Add MS Excel® equations and create plots of Aspen HYSYS variables
  • Insert ASW functions and assign ASW macros to add functionality
  • Enhance the interface using conditional formatting
  • Workshop: Add an ASW function to retrieve the simulation status and an ASW macro to change a column reflux ratio using a scroll bar

Running Scenarios
  • Overview of Scenarios and setting up Scenario Tables to run multiple cases
  • Workshop: Create a Scenario analysis to evaluate the effect of cutpoint temperatures on product flow rates

Linking Models to Process Data
  • Link simulation model variables with plant process data and create Plant Data Tables
  • Workshop: Import key process data tags and map the tags to model variables.  Plot the model and plant variables for a column temperature profile.

Publishing and Deploying Models
  • Restrict end-user access to ASW features
  • Encapsulate model files or pointers to files in ASW workbooks for easier distribution to end-users through email, MS SharePoint, etc.
  • Deploy files over a web server
  • Workshop: Set access conditions on a flowsheet interface to prevent accessing the Aspen HYSYS model and Workbook Organizer and make the simulation active on startup of the ASW workbook

Troubleshooting Common ASW Issues
  • Change the location or name of the linked Aspen HYSYS simulation file
  • Best practice to minimize breaking links between workbook and model variables
  • Create automatic Backups of ASW data
  • Verify workbook data before saving
