This knowledge base article is a collection of frequently asked questions and known issues for aspenONE Licensing and the Software License Manager (SLM) software.

  1. If I received a new computer, will I need a new standalone license?
    • AspenTech licenses are locked to a physical piece of hardware for them to work.  The hardware can be either a USB Dongle or a piece of hardware in the computer such as the Network card or Hard Drive.
    • If you have a Dongle-Free license, then you will need a new license. You will need to submit a License Re-host request through the Support Site. Please click the following link for instructions on what is required for a license re-host request.. View Details
    • If you are using a Dongle-Locked license, then you do not need a new license. You can install the USB Dongle and your current license on the new computer.
  2. If I lost my license, can I get a copy of it?
    • You can receive a copy of your license by submitting a license request through the support site.  Please click the following link to follow instructions for submitting a license key request. View Details
  3. What is a license System Name and how can I quickly find it?
    • A license System Name is a unique identifier for each license.
    • The System Name can be found by opening the license in Notepad or within the SLM License Profiler. Please click the following link for instructions on how to find the license System Name. View Details
  4. What is the license locking information and how do I obtain it?
    • The license locking information is used to lock an AspenTech license to a unique component within your computer, such as the Network Card, Hard Drive, or Computer Hostname and IP Address.
    • Download the SLM Lock Info Tool and run it on your computer. Provide the locking information to AspenTech. Please click the following link for further instructions on how to obtain the license locking information. View Details
  5. How do I install a Standalone License?
    • You can use the SLM License File Installer to install your license. Please click on the following link for instructions on how to use the SLM License File Installer. View Details
    • If the SLM License File Installer is unable to install the license, you can manually install the license by copying the license to the correct location and running the SLM Configuration Wizard. Please click the following link for instructions on how to manually install a standalone license. View Details
  6. How do I install a Network License?
    • You can use the SLM License File Installer to install your license. Please click on the following link for instructions on how to use the SLM License File Installer. View Details
    • If the SLM License File Installer is unable to install the license, you can manually install the license on the license server. Please click the following link for instructions on how to manually install a network license. View Details
  7. I have received multiple licenses, which license should I install on my computer?
    • Put all the licenses into the same folder. Use the SLM License File Installer and select the folder. The SLM License File Installer will only install the license that is locked to your computer. Please click the following link for detailed instructions. View Details
  8. Why does the License Installer say the locking does not match when installing my Dongle-Locked license, and the USB Dongle is plugged into the computer?
    • The Dongle Driver might not be installed, so Windows is not detecting it. Please click the following link for instructions on how install the dongle driver and for more Dongle Troubleshooting steps. View Details
  9. How do I configure a client computer to use a Network License?
    • Run the aspenONE SLM License Manager and click the Configure button.  Add the license server hostname or IP address and click the Apply button.  Please click the following link for detailed instructions. View Details
  10. What is commuting a license and how do I do it?
    • Commuting a license allows the user/client to borrow licenses from a network server. These borrowed, or commuted, licenses allow a client computer to run the licensed product while disconnected from the network without the use of a SLM dongle.  Please click the following link for instructions on how to commute a license.
