Professor Spotlight

In this section, we shine a light on a professor who's using AspenTech solutions to empower the next generation of engineers. This space features professors and their innovative approach to teaching process simulation using AspenTech software
Dr. Banholzer.pngThis month's Professor Spotlight shines on Dr. Banholzer, a highly accomplished Professor of Practice in Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Banholzer's believes students should have a well-rounded understanding of the chemical industry. He feels traditional classroom learning often falls short of replicating real-world complexities.
To address this gap, Dr. Banholzer recently invited AspenTech Solution Consultants, Henry Potter and Catherine Ayers to deliver a guest lecture for his senior/graduate-level course, Chem/CBE 505.

The lecture focused on Aspen Unified PIMS (AUP) software. Students used the software to model an ethylene plant, exploring how factors like feedstock costs, operating conditions, and carbon emission taxes impact profitability.

"Students have a much better sense of the complexity of supply chains and the critical role tools like AUP play in the industry," Dr. Banholzer remarked. "While lectures are valuable, there's no substitute for hands-on experience. Equipping students with these tools before graduation gives them a significant advantage as they enter the workforce."

Dr. Banholzer's commitment to bridging the gap between theory and practice is truly inspiring. By incorporating real-world examples and industry-standard software into his curriculum, he ensures his students graduate with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the ever-evolving chemical industry.
