What is License Commuting?Commuting is feature in Software License Manager (SLM) that allows you to use your AspenTech software while you are not connected to your company’s network.Does Commuting have time limit?Yes, up to 30 days. Licenses can be checked out anywhere from 1 to 30 days. After the time has expired, the license(s) will be return to your company’s license server. You can also return the commuted licenses prior expiration.How do I use Commuting?You can commute license by using the SLM Commuting tool, which is installed on your computer by default with your AspenTech software. To commute, follow these steps:
You must be connected to your company network to commute (directly or through VPN).
From the Start menu, select aspenONE SLM License Manager.
Click on Commute to launch the commute tool
The license server will be listed under the SLM Server(s) column.
You can view licenses by product or by server.
Licenses by Products tab to select one or more licenses under the product.
License By Server tab to choose one or more licenses, and the number of licenses to check out.
In the Days to check out license from server field, enter the number of days you require the license(s). The number of days can be any integer from 1 through 30.
Starting in V9, you can now also select the number of tokens to commute based on the licenses chosen.
Then click Commute. You can now exit the tool and run your licensed product away from the network. The license will expire automatically at midnight on the last day of your license period. You can return the license before the expiry date.
How do I return my commuted licenses early?
Select the licenses you will be returning.
Click Return or Return All
What are some of the Best Practices for Commuting?To maximize the efficiency of your license server when commuting:
Check licenses back in when you reconnect to the network.
Commute the licenses only for the period that you require.
Do not commute more licenses than you will need.
How can administrators better manage users Commuting licenses?In V11.1, the SLM Role-Based Commuting feature was introduced to help license server administrator establish policy for users communing licenses. Admins can easily set permission for who, how many days and tokens can be commuted.
